It’s Veterans Day today – Remember our Veterans and Heroes
Wearing a “POPPY” on Veterans Day / Remembrance Day is so much more than a tradition. Is is more that just a symbol of tribute for the ultimate sacrifice paid by our valued soldiers during war and peace times.
It’s about sacrifice, and service and our freedom paid for, at the highest cost one can pay.
It’s personal! The Poppy is a sign of respect and of the deepest loss one can experience.
Lest we Forget, Tell your children about it, and let your children tell their children, and their children, another generation….
For the Americans who have Veterans day instead and others that are not aware of the symbol of the poppy. Some basic facts on the Poppy.
The association between the poppy and war dates back to the Napoleonic wars when a writer saw a field of poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers.
During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Canadian Lt. Col. John McCrae (who served with my Grandfather by the way) was inspired to write the poem “In Flanders Fields” on sighting the poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle.
The poem was a great inspiration in adopting the poppy as the Flower of Remembrance. The first poppies were distributed in Canada in 1921. Today, the volunteer donations are an important source of revenue that supports many veterans (through the Royal Canadian Legion) today with shelter, medical attention etc.
